BEWARE THE MOBILE AUTO BODY REPAIR SCAM.
Cause I fell for it and I feel about as stupid and gullible and betrayed as you can feel.
Here's how it works: 2 Guys go through a neighborhood looking for cars with minor auto body damage -- scratches, small dents, etc. Upon finding such a car - mine, in this case - they knock on the door to see if you want them to fix it. They seem nice and knowledgeable and well spoken. They offer a great price. They have a truck and tools and they go to the local car dealer to buy paint, or so they say. And they have a FANTASTIC ACT. They talk a magnificent game, about their kids, about working at a local auto body place and this is their day off so they're just looking for extra cash. They offer a 2 year warrantee which they will email you and of course they never do. They beg you to recommend them to your neighborhood when you're satisfied with their work, which they know you will be.
They did take a dent out - not a super hard thing to do - and then they spend a couple of hours pretending to take out scratches and re-paint. They then come up with an excuse to cover over what they've done with a wax paste - in my case, that excuse was that it was a crazy windy day and they didn't want the wind to get dust and debris in what they had just painted - and they tell you to go to a self wash in a day and wash off their wax paste. When you do that, you see that the paint job on your car has been ruined and you will probably have to get the whole car repainted. This is the same MO that they evidently use in every case, though they aways have different, situation specific reasons for needing to cover up their work with the wax paste. But the result is always the same. When you remove the wax paste, your car is a freakin mess.
There are multiple reports of this scam on-line. Wish I had thought to look while they were here. In fact they have even advertised on Craig's List. On line they are talked about as Brandon and his "father," Johnny. In my case it was Brandon John and his friend "Larry." The number they gave me, which is referenced by some of these other on-line reports is 323-631-5715.
In retrospect, there were all sorts of red flags, which I ignored because they seemed so damn "nice" and "sincere" and wholesome. And they have found a BRILLIANT CON, because the Police don't seem to want to know about it. If you call the cops while they're in the act or in your neighborhood, the police will come. But once you have voluntarily paid someone some money, it becomes a civil matter and the police seem to have no interest in investigating. So apparently this CON had been going on for YEARS with no consequences for them.
If anyone has any brilliant ideas about how to stop these rip-off artists from continuing to take advantage of hard working people, I'm all ears. Restitution would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath. They have been allowed to perpetrate this nonsense for entirely too long.
Otherwise, I recommend that people spread this information as much as possible, perhaps on as many Next-door Neighborhoods as possible. And if you should be so unfortunate as to have them knock on your door, get their license plate number and call the cops immediately.
