I've got one better. My mother was supposedly telephoned on 10/28/17 and pledged $10.00 per 2 letters mailed to her.. Now the phone number they called to talk to her was disconnected in October 2016 and she had died March 3, 2017. I can't get through to them with the number provided in the letter.

, I am posting to warn you all about a scam I got sucked into by the NEW YORK POLICE CHIEFS FOUNDATION. This is not affiliated with the NYPD or any NYS Police! THE POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL NOT CALL AND SOLICIT DONATIONS! That said, this is how it went down. I received a phone call from this “foundation”, which sounded legit, requesting a donation. Of course he sounded very official like. I pledged $10, which he pointed out was a very small amount but they would be happy to have it. I did not have my credit card handy, and asked him to mail me info and I would pledge a contribution. I was mailed a sticker, looking like a police chief sticker, with a reminder to mail my donation. Well, I forgot. 2 weeks letter I get harassing phone calls from 631-416-5611. No messages, I called back and got fast busy. Finally yesterday I answered the phone and it was the solicitor asking me why after they had mailed me 2 reminders had I not sent my pledged donation. And he was abrupt about it. Stupid me feeling guilty that I pledged and did not provide, got my debit card and agreed to the $10 donation which was debited from my account. Fine. TODAY, I investigated and discovered the complaints about this “organization”. This money does NOT go to the police. Do the research. I was able to block this organization from taking any additional funds from my account, but am out the $10. Thank God it was only $10. This place will call from numerous phone numbers. DO NOT GIVE THEM MONEY. I have reported to the NYPD Internal Bureau and Suffolk County Police. I made a complaint on-line, and now I am telling you all. I got took. Feeling pretty stupid.

Tammy: Interesting info. I'm doing a research project on New York City Police Foundation in New Jersey, as they are funding Real Time Crime Centers here in NJ for all local police departments. Do you have any additional info on them ?

Wow!! You people are so pathetic. You made a $10 pledge and never sent it in. You complain that they called you to find out why you didn't pay. You finally squeeze the whopping $10 out of your tight a*s and now you complain that you were had. Let me go get you a box of Kleenex. If you did a little homework, you would see the organization is legitimate and they do a lot of good. So what if they use telemarketers to raise them money. It's against the law for officers to solicit donations. If you don't want to give, don't give. But please don't cry because you donated $10 bucks. These men and women risk their lives everyday to keep our communities safe. You should be worrying about the rapists and murderers running the streets instead of making a big deal about people raising money for police organizations. Put the decal on your chest, now you're a junior detective!

Your response certainly isn't helpful to the charity but it does show what kind of person you are in general.

Michelle Weiss, I'm curious what leads you to the conclusion that the charity is legit. I've received endless dubious calls from them, and I've researched all over the internet and found nothing to lead me to the conclusion that this is an above-board foundation. But if you know something we don't know, please share it. I'm all for helping out the police - I donate to a number of other charities I'm more familiar with that do just that. I just don't want to be scammed for my good intentions. I'm sure you can understand that...

This is one of the oldest Frauds, number that called me today, 917-924-9143 saying they are the NEW YORK POLICE CHIEFS FOUNDATION. This is total fraud. adding to the police or fire dept, some town name, and another friendly word such as chief, friend etc. They ask for your help/donation. There should be a strict law against trying to form a non-profit/ company w the word police or fire dept in the name. They do this all the time. I told them I give and help directly to my town's fire and police station and slammed the phone down.

The police chiefs foundation is a scam. I mailed in a check last week for $25 and now I’m harassed with calls every day and on weekends. I can’t get rid of them. I’m thinking maybe I can keep them on the line for a long time and hem and haw and waste their time it’ll keep them from scamming others and possibly they’ll get the message and stop. Calling me

I was asked for a donation but thought it might be a scam so I asked for something in writing which I received. This morning I've been searching the web for answers and found the following link and, therefore, believe it's NOT a scam. https://www.charitiesnys.com/pdfs/2009_Pennies.pdf.

It *is* a scam. Inclusion in that report just means they’re on a list of telemarketers; not that they’re necessarily legitimate. The report also states, ‘In only 42 of the 584 campaigns did the charity retain at least 65 percent of the money raised, the amount deemed acceptable under the Better Business Bureau's standards for charitable organizations.“ This particular organization gives 16% to the actual charity. (In cases like this, the telemarketer is run by the same people who run the charity. They’re just paying themselves to make these phone calls while giving a minimal amount of the receipts to their so-called “charity.”

The phone # (917) 480-5860 is in fact a scammer. Claiming to be calling on behalf of the NY Police Chiefs Foundation. The caller made his speech... My reply was "If you are, whom you say you are"... the caller hung up. I will in fact be reporting this number.

Repeated calls from a telemarketer seeking donations for the "Police Chiefs Foundation" who wouldn't take no for an answer. Had to hang up on him. This is undoubtedly one of those fake charities that walks the line between legal and illegal, with most of the money raised going to charity employees and the telemarketers. No legitimate charity is so rude and obnoxious on the phone. Call showed up as from Staten Island on the caller ID. Number 347-286-8923. Previous call was from Woodside (Queens), 347-354-1913.
